Forest and Beach Walks
Thunzi offers the 4km Babaans forest walk which will lead you past the dams and into our indigenous forest with milkwoods, yellowwoods, wild orchids and many more interesting trees and creatures.
Look out for the vervet monkeys and our signature bird, the Knysna Turaco with its brightly coloured wings.
You might be lucky enough to spot a bushbuck or even a blue duiker which is very rare. Do it in your own time taking a seat every now and again to catch a glimpse of the view that stretches out before you.
If you are feeling a bit more energetic, you can take a walk to the Maitland Nature Reserve and do one of three longer walks ranging from 3-9 km and has sea views OR The Island Nature Reserve is located approximately 11 km from Thunzi and is accessed via the Seaview Road.
The Reserve comprises 480 ha of indigenous Alexandria coastal forest and boasts tree species such as Outeniqua yellow-wood, white and hard pear as well as white milkwood. Fauna include small blue duiker, bushbuck, vervet monkey and bushpigs. More than fifty species of birds have been recorded, amongst them the Knysna Loerie.
The Reserve offers numerous walks, the most well-known being the 16 km Bushbuck hiking trail, as well as picnic sites and a braai area.
