Slice of heaven on your door step
Thunzi Bush Lodge a real treat for the whole family

LET'S GET LAZY The Lazy-Lizard pool at Thunzi Bush Lodge is the perfect place to unwind.
A romantic picnic in a serene setting, fishing and canoeing with the family or simply relaxing around a fire while the birds chirp in the background, Thunzi Bush Lodge offers a little slice of heaven just 30km from the hustle and bustle of Port Elizabeth's city centre.
The country style self-catering accommodation in Colleen Glen is where rustic meets luxury.
My family was invited for a two-night stay away from the stresses of city life.
There are plenty of activities on offer to keep the children entertained, allowing mom and dad to sit back and unwind — all in a safe and wholesome environment.
From bass fishing to forest walks and hikes, or even sandboarding on the nearby Maitlands sand dunes, in one way or another something is bound to tickle your fancy.
We stayed in a charming and comfortably furnished two-bedroom chalet with a breathtaking forest view.
The unit has its own lounge with full DSTV, and a dining area with an open plan kitchen. There is also daily housekeeping and laundry service.
All units are self-catering, making it a more affordable getaway, but should you wish to visit a restaurant for a meal or even just a drink, The Elephant Walk Restaurant & Country Pub, Barnacles Restaurant and the Three Legged Pig are just some of the popular surrounding options.
After enjoying a comforting lunch at The Three Legged Pig, my husband, children and I made our way to Thunzi Bush Lodge where, after checking in, we immediately made a beeline for the pool.
It is easy to see why the communal pool is known as the lazy-lizard pool, with its sun loungers and breathtaking setting, it is the perfect spot to cool down and soak up some Vitamin D.
The lodge also sells cooldrinks and alcoholic beverages which can be enjoyed pool side, though when we were there, the restrictions on alcohol sales were unfortunately still in place.
The lodge has two dams where bass fishing and canoeing can be enjoyed as a family, and so after a couple of hours in the sun, we were able to catch the sunset on a canoe.
Another perk is that each unit has its own private boma where, in the evenings, Thunzi staff light the fire for each of their guests to enjoy a braai if they wish.
NOU GAAN ONS BRAAI Guests can enjoy a braai at their own private boma.
What makes Thunzi so special is that it provides the perfect setting for a romantic getaway — canoeing at sunset, spa treatments in the comfort of your chalet, bird watching, forest walks and picnics — but it is also more than adequate for young families with its over-sized outdoor chess set, swimming pool and jungle gym.
Thunzi is also allows more than enough room for social distancing, and of course plenty of fresh air.
Masks are mandatory in all communal areas and sanitisers are made available at the reception as well as in each unit.
On day two of our mini getaway, we headed out early after breakfast to The Elephant Walk Restaurant for coffees and milkshakes, where we also picked up our pre-ordered picnic basket.
When we arrived back at Thunzi, floor cushions, a flat table and blankets were already laid out for us to enjoy our picnic.
The food — prepared by Elephant Walk — was sublime. A green salad, olives, cheeses, ham, chicken liver spread, mini chicken skewers and freshly baked artisan bread were just some of the spoils inside our basket.
The best part, of course, was the decadent lemon meringue tart.
After eating our weight in food, we enjoyed a long walk through the indigenous forest and wetlands.
Many bird species and animals including bushbuck, blue duiker and vervet monkeys can be spotted.
Ideal for Valentine's Day, day guests can either book a picnic spot and bring their own baskets or book and collect a pre-arranged basket to enjoy.
The Host Management took over management of the lodge in October 2020.
